Lord Shiva, also known as Mahadev (Great God), is one of the most important gods in Hinduism. He is part of the holy trinity (Trimurti) with Brahma and Vishnu. Here are the 6 most famous and iconic stories about Lord Shiva:
1. Shiva Meets Ganesha: The First Encounter
The Story:
One day, Goddess Parvati decided to create a guardian to watch over her while Lord Shiva was away. She made a little boy out of turmeric paste and breathed life into him.
She told him: “Guard the entrance and not allow anyone inside.”
As little Ganesha had never seen Lord Shiva, when Shiva came back home, Ganesha blocked his way. This drove Shiva furious. A battle started between the two, and in rage, Lord Shiva cut off Ganesha’s head.
The Resolution:
Maa Parvati was heartbroken when she got to know. To pacify her, Lord Shiva replaced the boy’s head with one of his ganas (his close men), and Lord Ganesha became Ganpati (Lord of All Ganas).
2. Maa Sati’s Sacrifice & Shiva’s Grief
The Story:
Mata Sati, Lord Shiva’s better half, was the daughter of Daksha, a proud king. One day, Daksha organised a yagna (sacrificial ritual) but did not invite Lord Shiva or Maa Sati.
Against Lord Shiva’s advice, Sati decided to attend, hoping her father would approve of her choice and Lord Shiva. But at the yagna, Daksha humiliated Lord Shiva in front of Maa Sati.
Filled with guilt and unable to bear the insult to her husband, Maa Sati jumped into the fire and died (self-immolated).
Shiva’s Rage:
When Lord Shiva got to know, he was furious and distraught. He carried Mata Sati’s charred body and roamed the universe in grief.
In his grief-stricken state, Lord Shiva unleashed his destructive power, creating a catastrophic upheaval that threatened to engulf the universe.
The Resolution:
To save creation from annihilation, Lord Vishnu and other deities intervened. They used their powers to calm Lord Shiva and convinced him to restore balance. Realizing the futility of his anger, Lord Shiva withdrew, retreating into deep meditation and renunciation.
3. Samudra Manthan: Shiva Drinks the Poison (Neelkanth)
The Story:
During the Samudra Manthan (churning of the ocean), the gods and demons were working together to get the divine amrita (nectar of immortality). But first, a deadly poison (halahala) emerged from the ocean that threatened to destroy the entire universe.
The gods and demons grew worried and asked Lord Shiva for help. The poison was so toxic that no one else could handle it.
Shiva’s Selfless Act:
Lord Shiva, being the carefree one, collected the poison in his palm and drank it to save the world.
He stopped the poison from reaching his body by holding it in his throat. Lord Shiva’s throat turned blue from the poison.
The Name:
From then on, he came to be known as Neelkanth (the Blue-Throated One).
This story shows how selfless Lord Shiva is and how he saved the entire Universe
4. Shiva and Parvati’s Marriage: The Penance
The Story:
A beautiful goddess named Sati (later reborn as Parvati) caught sight of Lord Shiva while he was meditating. Sati was enamored by his divine aura and immediately fell in love with him.
She was the daughter of King Daksha, a powerful ruler among the gods. Sati was determined to marry Lord Shiva, despite her father’s disapproval.
The Penance:
She chose to follow her heart and embarked on a journey to win Lord Shiva’s affection. Upon reaching Mount Kailash, Sati endured rigorous penance to seek Lord Shiva’s attention.
The Marriage:
Impressed by her devotion and determination, Lord Shiva eventually accepted her as his consort. Their union brought joy to the heavens, and they became the divine couple, adored by all.
5. Kedarnath: Shiva Hides as a Bull
The Story:
The Pandavas (from Mahabharata) were guilty for the war they caused and searched for Lord Shiva to forgive them. But Shiva, seeing their pride, hid as a bull in Kedarnath.
The Discovery:
When they found him, he tried to escape underground, yet his hump stayed on the surface. That place became the Kedarnath Temple.
This is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas (holy Shiva temples) in India.
6. The First Jyotirlinga: Shiva as Infinite Light

Long ago, the gods wanted to know who was the strongest. They went to Shiva to find the answer.
