Jyotirlinga means the place where Lord Shiva himself established. Beautiful description of this temple is found in the works of great poets like Puranas, Mahabharata and Kalidas. Shiva’s name appears in the form of ‘Rudra’ in Puranas. Rudra is the god of destruction and welfare. Like Vishnu, the description of many incarnations of Shiva is found in the Puranas. The importance of Shiva is highest among all the other deities of the Puranas. Garlands of rudraksh, moon, Ganges stream, Trishul in hand and Baghambar in waist and barefoot Shiva resides in Kailasa Dham. Parvati is his wife or Shakti. He is the father of Ganesha and Kartikeya
Jyotirlinga appeared from the rays
It is said that when the universe was created, the first 12 rays of the sun fell on the earth. 12 Jyotirlingas were made from them. Ujjain Mahakaleshwar Jyotirling was also created from the first 12 rays of the Sun. Since then Baba Mahakaleshwar is worshiped in Ujjain. The entire land of Ujjain is called Usar Bhoomi. Means the land of crematorium. Lord Mahakal’s face is towards the south, that’s why Ujjain Mahakal temple has very special importance from the point of view of tantra activities. God Harsiddhi, Kalabhairav, Vikrantbhairav etc. reside in the city of Mahakal. The Mahakaleshwar temple complex in Ujjain has many temples of various gods and goddesses. Devotees reach in queues from the main gate to the sanctum sanctorum to have darshan of Mahakal Baba.
There is also an ancient tank in the temple, bathing here is said to be pure and to destroy sins and troubles. The Mahakaleshwar temple is in three sections. Mahakaleshwar himself is in the lower part. Omkareshwar is in the middle part. Lord Nagachandreshwar is in the upper part. Idols of Mother Parvati, Lord Ganesha and Kartikeya can be seen in the sanctum sanctorum of Lord Mahakaleshwar. For information, let us tell you that Lord Krishna also took his education from Ujjain. The king was not allowed to stay in Ujjain
Let us tell you that Baba Mahakal himself appeared with the origin of the universe. Even today the king of Ujjain is Mahakal. There is a legend prevalent about Baba Mahakal, which is true even today. Earlier no king was allowed to stay in Ujjain, the city of Maharaj Mahakal. This was because it is said that centuries ago, if another king spent a night here, he would have lost his kingdom. For this reason, the Scindia royal family built a palace to stay in the shelter of Mahakal. At that time, the Scindia Rajghana had built the Kalideh Palace in Ujjain for their stay.
It is said that Scindia Maharaj used to stay in this palace when he came to Ujjain. Even today the Prime Minister and the Chief Minister do not stay in Ujjain during the night. Along with this, Congress MP Jyotiraditya Scindia also does not stay in these cities at night. This story is as true today as it was then. Even today the king of Ujjain is Baba Mahakal.
Why is Bhasma Aarti done?
According to Shivpuran, ashes are the essence of creation. One day the whole creation is going to turn into this ash. Lord Shiva always holds the essence of the universe. It means that one day this entire creation will merge into Lord Shiva. To prepare bhasma, lumps made from cow dung of Kapila cow, wood of shami, peepal, palash, bad, amaltas and ber tree are burnt together. Appropriate chants are also done during this. The ash obtained on burning these things is filtered through a cloth. Thus, the bhasma prepared is offered to Lord Shiva.

There are beliefs that Tilak should be applied to the ashes offered to Lord Shiva. Just as many types of things are purified and cleaned with ashes, in the same way by applying tilak of ashes offered to Lord Shiva, you will get renewable virtue. Along with this, you will also get freedom from the sins of many births. Bhasma has special importance in the worship of Mahakal and this is its most important prasad.
