There are two popular stories associated with the origin of Hanuman Chalisa:
Story 1: Tulsidas and Mughal Emperor Akbar
This story claims that the 16th century poet-saint Tulsidas was falsely accused by the Mughal emperor Akbar and imprisoned. In jail, Tulsidas prayed fervently to Hanuman and composed Hanuman Chalisa for 40 days under divine inspiration. It is believed that on the 40th day, Hanuman intervened and caused an attack by monkeys on Akbar’s palace, leading to Tulsidas’s release.
Story 2: Devotion to Tulsidas
Another story suggests that Hanuman Chalisa originated entirely from Tulsidas’s Hanuman devotion. He simply opened his heart in praise and prayer, resulting in 40 verses of Chalisa.
There is no historical evidence to confirm either story. However, both stories highlight the importance of faith and devotion in Hinduism, and the belief that Hanuman bestows strength on his devotees and removes obstacles.
