Ganga Sagar is called the father of pilgrimages, it means to say that Ganga Sagar has more importance than other pilgrimages. Perhaps this is the reason why this proverb is very popular among the general public that- “Sab Tirath Baar Baar, Ganga Sagar Ek Baar”.
The place where Ganga meets the sea is called Ganga Sagar. Ganga Sagar is a very beautiful forest island group situated on the Bay of Bengal in the southern border of Bengal. In ancient times it was also known as Patal Lok. Travelers from Calcutta usually go to Ganga Sagar by ship.
There is a lot of crowd and brightness here during the days of the fair. But in the rest of the days there is a shadow of peace and loneliness. Pilgrimage place-Only a few sadhus live in Sagar Island. It is now covered with forest and is mostly uninhabited. There is an ancient temple at Vamankhal place, one mile north of where the Ganga Sagar fair takes place in this Sagar Island.
At this time, where a fair is held on the Ganga Sagar, earlier Gangaji used to meet in the sea here, but now the mouth of Ganga has retreated.
Now a small stream of Gangaji meets the sea near Ganga Sagar. Today it is a flat plain and as far as the eye can see, there is only dense forest.
During the days of the fair, these forests are cut down for many miles to make space for the fair on the banks of the Ganges. The fair of Ganga Sagar is held on Makar Sankranti. Many shops of hotels, worship material and other items are also opened for food and drink.The fruits of all pilgrimages are found in the ocean of the Ganges alone. On the day of Sankranti, the greatness of bathing in Ganga Sagar is considered to be the greatest. There is a bath and shaving ceremony in the morning and afternoon. Here people also perform Shradh and Pind Daan.Kapil goes to Muni’s temple and has darshan, after that people return and the fair ends on the fifth day. At some distance from Ganga Sagar, there is a new temple of Kapil Rishi built in the year 1973, in which there is an idol of Kapil Rishi in the middle.On one side of that idol is the idol of Gangaji with King Bhagirath in his lap and on the other side is the idol of King Sagar and Hanuman ji. Apart from this, there is also the ashram of Acharya Kapilanand ji of Sankhya Yoga, Mahadev Temple, Yogendra Math, Shiv Shakti-Mahanirvan Ashram and the huge temple of Bharat Sevashram Sangh.
There is a story in Ramayana according to which Kapil Muni was doing penance at some other place. At the same time, the Suryavanshi king Sagar of Ayodhya started performing the ritual of an Ashwamedha Yagya. Fearing his Ashwamedha Yagya, Indra took the form of a demon and stole the Yagya’s horse and took it to Patal Lok and tied it up in Kapil’s hermitage.
King Sagar had two wives – Keshini and Sumati. Confusion was born from Keshini’s womb and sixty thousand sons from Sumati’s womb. The confusion was of a very high nature. He used to give a lot of pain to the subjects. So Sagar had expelled him from his kingdom.
Due to the theft of Ashwamedh’s horse, Sagar became very worried. He asked his sixty thousand sons to find the horse. Sixty thousand sons reached Patal Lok while searching for the horse.
There they saw the sacrificial horse tied up in Kapil Muni’s hermitage. Those people insulted Muni Kapil considering him as a thief. Being insulted, sage Kapil cursed everyone – ‘You people become ashes.
All were burnt to ashes as soon as they received the curse. Seeing the delay in the arrival of the sons, King Sagar sent his grandson Anshuman, who was the son of Asamanjas, to find out. While searching for Anshuman, he reached Patal Lok. Seeing all his uncles turned into ashes there, he understood the whole situation.
He pleased by praising Kapil Muni. Kapil Muni allowed him to take the horse and also said that if a descendant of King Sagar could bring Ganga to that place, everyone would be saved. Anshuman returned to Ayodhya with the horse. After completing the Yagya, King Sagar ruled for 30 thousand years and finally went to heaven by giving the throne to Anshuman. Anshuman tried hard to bring Ganga to earth, but could not succeed. Anshuman’s son Dilip did penance for a long time.
But he also could not succeed. Dilip’s son Bhagirath did severe penance. Ganga assured that I would definitely come to earth, but the time I come from heaven to earth, someone should be present to stop my flow.
सारे तीरथ बार-बार गंगा सागर एक बार जाने क्यों
गंगा सागर को तीर्थों का पिता कहा जाता है, कहने का तात्पर्य है कि गंगा सागर का अन्य तीर्थों की अपेक्षा अत्यधिक महत्व है। शायद यही कारण है कि जन साधारण में यह कहावत बहुत प्रचलित है कि- ”सब तीरथ बार-बार, गंगा सागर एक बार।’
‘ गंगा जिस स्थान पर समुद्र में मिलती है, उसे गंगा सागर कहा गया है। गंगा सागर एक बहुत सुंदर वन द्वीप समूह है जो बंगाल की दक्षिण सीमा में बंगाल की खाड़ी पर स्थित है। प्राचीन समय में इसे पाताल लोक के नाम से भी जाना जाता था। कलकत्ते से यात्री प्रायः जहाज में गंगा सागर जाते हैं।
यहां मेले के दिनों में काफी भीड़-भाड़ व रौनक रहती है। लेकिन बाकी दिनों में शांति एवं एकाकीपन छाया रहता है। तीर्थ स्थान-सागर द्वीप में केवल थोड़े से साधु ही रहते हैं। यह अब वन से ढका और प्रायः जनहीन है। इस सागर द्वीप में जहां गंगा सागर मेला होता है, वहां से एक मील उत्तर में वामनखल स्थान पर एक प्राचीन मंदिर है।
इस समय जहां गंगा सागर पर मेला लगता है, पहले यहीं गंगाजी समुद्र में मिलती थी, किंतु अब गंगा का मुहाना पीछे हट गया है। अब गंगा सागर के पास गंगाजी की एक छोटी धारा समुद्र से मिलती है। आज यहां सपाट मैदान है और जहां तक नजर जाती है वहां केवल घना जंगल।
मेले के दिनों में गंगा के किनारे पर मेले के लिए स्थान बनाने के लिए इन जंगलों को कई मीलों तक काट दिया जाता है। गंगा सागर का मेला मकर संक्रांति को लगता है। खाने-पीने के लिए होटल, पूजा-पाठ की सामग्री व अन्य सामानों की भी बहुत-सी दुकानें खुल जाती हैं।
सारे तीर्थों का फल अकेले गंगा सागर में मिल जाता है। संक्रांति के दिन गंगा सागर में स्नान का महात्म्य सबसे बड़ा माना गया है। प्रातः और दोपहर स्नान और मुण्डन-कर्म होता है। यहां पर लोग श्राद्ध व पिण्डदान भी करते हैं।
कपिल मुनि के मंदिर में जाकर दर्शन करते हैं, इसके बाद लोग लौटते हैं ओर पांचवें दिन मेला समाप्त हो जाता है। गंगा सागर से कुछ दूरी पर कपिल ऋषि का सन् 1973 में बनाया गया नया मंदिर है जिसमें बीच में कपिल ऋषि की मूर्ति है।
उस मूर्ति के एक तरफ राजा भगीरथ को गोद में लिए हुए गंगाजी की मूर्ति है तथा दूसरी तरफ राजा सगर तथा हनुमान जी की मूर्ति है। इसके अलावा यहां सांखय योग के आचार्य कपिलानंद जी का आश्रम, महादेव मंदिर, योगेंद्र मठ, शिव शक्ति-महानिर्वाण आश्रम और भारत सेवाश्रम संघ का विशाल मंदिर भी हैं।
रामायण में एक कथा मिलती है जिसके अनुसार कपिल मुनि किसी अन्य स्थान पर तपस्या कर रहे थे। ऐसे ही समय में अयोध्या के सूर्यवंशी राजा सगर एक अश्वमेध यज्ञ का अनुष्ठान करने लगे। उनके अश्वमेध यज्ञ से डरकर इंद्र ने राक्षस रूप धारण कर यज्ञ के अश्व को चुरा लिया और पाताल लोक में ले जाकर कपिल के आश्रम में बांध दिया।
राजा सगर की दो पत्नियां थीं- केशिनी और सुमति। केशिनी के गर्भ से असमंजस पैदा हुआ और सुमति के गर्भ से साठ हजार पुत्र। असमंजस बड़ा ही उद्धत प्रकृति का था। वह प्रजा को बहुत पीड़ा देता था। अतः सगर ने उसे अपने राज्य से निकाल दिया था।
अश्वमेध का घोड़ा चुरा लिये जाने के कारण सगर बड़ी चिंता में पड़ गये। उन्होंने अपने साठ हजार पुत्रों को अश्व ढूंढने के लिए कहा। साठों हजार पुत्र अश्व ढूंढते ढूंढते-ढूंढते पाताल लोक में पहुंच गये।
वहां उन लोगों ने कपिल मुनि के आश्रम में यज्ञीय अश्व को बंधा देखा। उन लोगों ने मुनि कपिल को ही चोर समझकर उनका काफी अपमान कर दिया। अपमानित होकर ऋषि कपिल ने सभी को शाप दिया- ‘तुम लोग भस्म हो जाओ।
‘ शाप मिलते ही सभी भस्म हो गये। पुत्रों के आने में विलंब देखकर राजा सगर ने अपने पौत्र अंशुमान, जो असमंजस का पुत्र था, को पता लगाने के लिए भेजा। अंशुमान खोजते-खोजते पाताल लोक पहुंचा। वहां अपने सभी चाचाओं को भस्म रूप में परिणत देखा तो सारी स्स्थिति समझ गया।
उन्होंने कपिल मुनि की स्तुति कर प्रसन्न किया। कपिल मुनि ने उसे घोड़ा ले जाने की अनुमति दे दी और यह भी कहा कि यदि राजा सगर का कोई वंशज गंगा को वहां तक ले आये तो सभी का उद्धार हो जाएगा। अंशुमान घोड़ा लेकर अयोध्या लौट आया। यज्ञ समाप्त करने के बाद राजा सगर ने 30 हजार वर्षों तक राज्य किया और अंत में अंशुमान को राजगद्दी देकर स्वर्ग सिधार गये। अंशुमान ने गंगा को पृथ्वी पर लाने का काफी प्रयत्न किया, लेकिन सफल नहीं हो पाया। अंशुमान के पुत्र दिलीप ने दीर्घकाल तक तपस्या की।
लेकिन वह भी सफल नहीं हो पाया। दिलीप के पुत्र भगीरथ ने घोर तपस्या की। गंगा ने आश्वासन दिया कि मैं जरूर पृथ्वी पर आऊंगी, लेकिन जिस समय मैं स्वर्गलोक से पृथ्वी पर आऊंगी, उस समय मेरे प्रवाह को रोकने के लिए कोई उपस्थित होना चाहिए।
भगीरथ ने इसके लिए भगवान शिव को प्रसन्न किया। भगवान शिव ने गंगा को अपनी जटा में धारण कर लिया। भगीरथ ने उन्हें पुनः प्रसन्न किया तो शिवजी ने गंगा को छोड़ दिया।
गंगा शिवजी के मस्तक से सात स्रोतों में भूमि पर उतरी। ह्रानिदी, पावनी और नलिनी नामक तीन प्रवाह पूर्व की ओर चल गये, वड.क्ष, सीता तथा सिंधु नामक तीन प्रवाह पश्चिम की ओर चले गये और अंतिम एक प्रवाह भगीरथ के बताए हुए मार्ग से चलने लगा।
भगीरथ पैदल गंगा के साथ नहीं चल सकते थे, अतः उन्हें एक रथ दिया गया। भगीरथ गंगा को लेकर उसी जगह आये जहां उनके प्रपितामह आदि भस्म हुए थे। गंगा सबका उद्धार करती हुई सागर में मिल गयी। भगीरथ द्वारा लाये जाने के कारण गंगा का एक नाम भागीरथी भी पड़ा।
जहां भगीरथ के पितरों का उद्धार हुआ, वही स्थान सागर द्वीप या गंगासागर कहलाता है। गंगा सागर से कुछ दूरी पर कपिल ऋषि का सन् 1973 में बनाया गया नया मंदिर है जिसमें बीच में कपिल ऋषि की मूर्ति है। उस मूर्ति के एक तरफ राजा भगीरथ को गोद में लिए हुए गंगाजी की मूर्ति है तथा दूसरी तरफ राजा सगर तथा हनुमान जी की मूर्ति है।
