Why Is Diwali Celebrated?
Diwali represents the victory of light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance and good over evil. One of the most popular Hindu traditions connects Diwali with the return of Lord Rama to Ayodhya after completing fourteen years of exile and defeating Ravana.
According to the Ramayana, the people of Ayodhya welcomed Lord Rama, Goddess Sita and Lakshmana by lighting rows of oil lamps. This beautiful tradition became associated with the celebration of Deepavali.
For millions of Hindus, Diwali is also dedicated to Goddess Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth, prosperity and good fortune. Lord Ganesha is worshipped along with Goddess Lakshmi for wisdom and auspicious beginnings.
